Day Trip Tips
Make the most of your excursions.
- Border crossings need passport; Laos visa $35 cash USD or 1,500 THB—bring exact change to avoid scams.
- Greenbus #20 (Chiang Rai–Chiang Saen) stops at Chiang Khong bus station hourly; buy tickets at counter, not on board.
- Motorbike rental shops cluster near the 7-Eleven on the main road; inspect brakes—hills are steep.
- Mekong fog is thickest Nov-Feb; sunrise trips require 04:30 departures.
- Most day-trip restaurants close 14:00; pack snacks or eat early.
- ATMs in Chiang Khong dispense baht only; Huay Xai has USD & kip ATMs if you cross the border.
- Sunday is market day in Chiang Saen—combine with Golden Triangle trip.
- Rainy season (Jun-Sep) can flood waterfall trails—check locally before departing.
